tramming a vertical mill y axis without nod

How I tram my mini-mill | MachinistBlog.com

If you don’t know, tramming is the process of adjusting the mill’s column so the spindle is perpendicular to the table. By the way, this procedure only trams the X-axis. Unlike most other mills, the mini-mill’s Y-axis is not adjustable, although there are ways of doing it if you’re willing to go to the trouble.

For example, if the end mill is 1/2" diameter, I advance the Y-axis handwheel 7 turns betwen passes, or 7/16". This gives me 1/16" overlap on each pass. For convenience in counting revolutions I start and end with the hand wheel crank at the bottom of its swing.

 · If you then rotate or nod the head to drill a hole (or plunge/traverse to mill some angle or wall) without aligning the ram first, your angle will not be true to the part. The ram and turret is there to be used, and just like tilt/nod on the head, when taken out of position must be put back into correct orientation to the degree required when/if it matters.

Tramming A Vertical Mill Y Axis Without Nod

On Vertical Mills, the 4th Axis is frequently parallel to X or Y, and is laid down. On a Horizontal Mill, the 4th Axis is also parallel to X or Y, but it is standing up. Both methods work great, but the horizontal mill's standing 4th axis frequently has more clearance available since the work is never trapped between the table and the axis.
